Ownership of a yacht is a major event in a person’s life. It is a very personal accomplishment that reflects the owner’s philosophy, standards, personality, and frequently his or her dreams. Each owner is individual in perception of what a yacht should be, how it should be maintained, what resources should be allocated to it, and how and where it should be used.
In these complex times, a very scarce resource is often the personal time an owner has available to allocate to his or her yacht. Selection, maintenance, upgrading, voyage preparation, relocation, and other yacht management functions take time and often require urgent attention that may not be available to an owner. This often results in reduced usage of the yacht and less enjoyment due to administration and management cutting into the quality time of yacht usage.
The Chandlery Yacht Management Program (CYM) was created based on years of experience with yachts and yacht owners who have indicated they would benefit from professional management of their yacht. Experience has also shown that each owner requires a program tailored to his or her specific needs, resource allocation, and desires. The CYM program can range from periodic check-outs of a yacht to complete management, with the yacht owner able to step aboard a prepared, provisioned, and crewed yacht and step off at the end of a trip with no further tasks or responsibilities.
The principals of The Chandlery uniquely offer many years of experience in yacht operation, navigation, delivery, maintenance, supply, upgrading, design, consulting, yacht sales, Santa Barbara slip acquisition, and program administration. In addition, they have created a CYM Team of other proven specialists to supplement their in-house capabilities.
YACHT MANAGEMENT SERVICES
The needs, resources, and desires of each yacht owner are different. The Chandlery Yacht Management Program is organized to be tailored to the exact requirements of each owner. Program elements are as follows:
- CONSULTATION
The first step is a meeting to determine the requirements of the yacht owner. A detailed check list is reviewed to determine the services desired. Initial selections may be changed over time as needs change. Customized requirements are possible.
- ACQUISITION
If a yacht has not yet been purchased, CYM can assist in defining and prioritizing the needs and desires of the potential yacht owner. Research is then conducted to provide several choices for consideration. Assistance is provided in negotiation, inspection, sea trial, survey, delivery, and slip acquisition. CYM has recently handled the purchase of four seven figure yachts for clients. These and other major acquisitions included acquisitions from Europe, the Orient, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States.
- SLIP ACQUISITION
Due to extreme scarcity, acquisition of a slip at Santa Barbara Harbor has become a major challenge. CYM has extensive experience and resources to deal with this very complex situation. Often final objectives must be met through stages or through multiple slip transactions involving several parties. All procedures are conducted in conformance with the policies of the City of Santa Barbara.
- TRAINING
Training of all aspects of yacht operation is available including systems operation, maneuvering, anchoring and mooring, navigation, electronics, maintenance, repair, safety, weather, and more. Training will be conducted by CYM staff or CYM Team members, as appropriate.
Seminars are conducted periodically for yacht owners, their families, and crew members of subjects related to yacht operation.
- CHECK-OUT
CYM has created systems and maintenance check lists to ensure that a yacht is ready for operation at all times. The yacht owner decides which items he or she wishes to handle and which are to be handled by CYM. Included are daily, weekly, monthly, three month, six month, and annual maintenance schedules. In addition, there are schedules for voyage preparation, provisioning, and more. Periodic reports are submitted to the yacht owner. The objective is to detect and remedy any problems in advance in order that the yacht owner had minimal problems at sea, if any.
- MAINTENANCE
In conjunction with CYM Team Members, all maintenance and inspections are conducted in accordance with the check list decisions made by the yacht owner. Included are all mechanical, electric, electronic, propulsion, rigging, and hull systems.
- CLEANING
CYM can assume responsibility for the yacht being cleaned above and below decks on a time schedule determined by the yacht owner.
- PROVISIONING
Provisions can be on-board in advance of a day trip or a voyage. Specific needs are coordinated with the yacht owner or his or her representative.
- UPGRADES
CYM can consult, perform research, and install any upgrade desired by the yacht owner, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, propulsion, rigging, sails, and other systems through the use of its own capabilities or those of team members.
- PURCHASES
Having operated the largest ship’s chandlery between San Francisco and Los Angeles for many years, CYC is uniquely qualified to advise the yacht owner regarding purchases of items for his or her yacht. CYC provides discounted prices for purchases made on behalf of the yacht owner.
- CAPTAIN – CREW
CYM can provide qualified permanent or temporary captain and/or or crew as desired. This can be during the initial usage of a new yacht to provide training, or for extended usage of the yacht.
- YACHT DELIVERY
CYM can have the yacht delivered to or from the next harbor or anywhere in the world by a qualified captain and crew.
- YACHT SALE
If it comes time to sell the yacht or to change to another, CYM can handle the complete transaction including value determination, publicity, negotiation, inspection, survey, and closing.
